This week's throwback offering?

Before and after photos, EAT PRAY LOVE.

Dear Ones —

Eleven years ago today, I set out on my EAT PRAY LOVE journey, trying to bring a sense of purpose and joy to my life.

I had been sad for a long time. The photo on the left was taken several months before I started traveling — during my darkest days of depression and divorce.

The photo on the right was taken during the last week of my EAT PRAY LOVE journey.

Clearly, things had gotten much, much better.

🙂

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: SOMETIMES RUNNING AWAY WORKS.

I am so grateful that I found the courage to embark on my own quest.

Today I send encouragement and prayers to all of you who are on your own journeys, struggling to find your own happiness, struggling to determine the terms of your own life. Be strong. Don't you dare give up on yourself. Fight your way to the light.

All love,
LG

THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS at the Burning Man festival — oh my goodness, what would dear Alma make of Burning Man? I myself went out there over 20 years ago and wrote about the festival for SPIN Magazine…back when they still had guns and motorcycle gangs and it was all kind of scary — but amazing! Have fun, Aubrey. Drink lots of water!

This is in Black Rock City, Nevada, at the annual Burning Man event 🙂 I enjoyed reading while waiting out dust storms, and a few sweltering afternoon hours when it was too hot to explore. "The Man" in the background is being prepped for burn – an incredible spectacle, and one of the best fireworks shows on the planet!

BOOK OF THE DAY:

FRIENDSWOOD, by René Steinke.

Dear Ones —

Followers of this page know that I often spontaneously recommend books that I love. Today's book is a brand new one, just published a few weeks ago, called FRIENDSWOOD.

This is an extraordinarily beautifully-written novel, set in a remote town in Texas, in the aftermath of an industrial accident. But it's really about life, death, and love in a small town, on a big scale. Steinke (a National Book Award Finalist, and a genius at descriptive prose) understands her characters and her setting so intimately that it makes your heart ache to enter their lives. You worry for them, you pray for them, you breathe with them…

Read this one, you guys. It's really, really good.

(And don't just take my word for it — O Magazine loved it, too, calling it: "Masterfully observed." Actually, all the reviews are raves.)

HAPPY READING!

Heart,
LG

A friend of this page shared this photo today and it made me laugh out loud this morning.

And it's exactly what I needed to see.

I'm leaving today to head to Atlanta, to begin rehearsals for Oprah Winfrey's THE LIFE YOU WANT TOUR. For those of you who haven't heard about it — Oprah's doing an incredible 8-city-wide, weekend-long stadium tour across America this autumn, inspiring people to change their lives…and she has invited me to be part of it.

(Here is the link for information and tickets: https://ift.tt/1jv3erI)

I'll be giving a speech about quests and adventures and women's courage….and I will be totally channeling my inner warrior princess, in order to pull it off!

Needless to say, I have never spoken before to a stadium filled with 15,000 people.

It makes my knees weak and it makes my stomach tumble in fear.

But it also makes me want to ROAR.

I say this to you all the time, but today I am saying it specifically to myself: ONWARD!

Heart,
LG
